Welcome to Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church We, the called people of God at Holy Redeemer,
Believe and Value:
Proclaiming the inspired and inerrant Word of God to all and holding to the doctrines of the Book of Concord and the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod as derived from God’s Word. Bringing people to a living relationship with Christ where God’s presence is experienced and His love is extended into the community. Participating in Christ-centered Word and Sacrament Ministry. A welcoming atmosphere that provides spiritual and social fellowship opportunities to build friendships where people have fun and care for each other in a nurturing community.
Providing discipleship opportunities for members to discover and grow in the use of their unique God given spiritual gifts, skills, talents, treasures and interests to provide encouragement and opportunities to serve God and each other. Building stronger relationships with God by educating and equipping people through a variety of faith building experiences to live out God’s word in their relationships and daily lives.
The mission of Holy Redeemer is teaching and living out the Word of God, so that all people may receive God’s grace and experience an intimate relationship with Jesus, through a body of believers who love one another and strive to be like their Lord and Savior.
Holy Redeemer will be the center of spiritual development and outreach in our community where God is transforming people into committed followers of Christ.
Pastor Helms was born December 31, 1956, in Reedsburg, Wisconsin, to Tom and Shirley Helms. He had the joy of sharing the message of God’s love with his younger brother, Mike, who is now actively involved in sharing Christ with countless people through his Christ-centered music ministry. Mike lives in the state of Oregon. Pastor’s sister, Ann, and her husband, Paul live in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, and have two children, Matthew and Sarah.
Pastor Helms came to trust in Jesus Christ as his personal Savior through the ministry of Rev. James Knuth and Rev. Carl Selle at Calvary Lutheran Chapel, the LCMS campus ministry on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This event changed the direction of pastor’s life and instead of attending law school he enrolled at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri. Pastor received his Master of Divinity in 1984, and then accepted his first call to St. Peter Lutheran Church, in Richmond, Michigan, where he served as associate pastor and assistant pastor through January, 1993. He accepted a call to serve as the sole pastor of Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and served that congregation from 1993 through August of 1999. He arrived at Holy Redeemer in September of 1999.
Pastor Helms has two adult children, Rebecca and Mark. Both of his children live in Richmond, Michigan. The Lord has also blessed pastor with three beloved grandchildren, Nathan, Karmyra and Xavier. Besides spending time with his grandchildren, Pastor Helms enjoys reading, cycling, fishing, camping, canoeing, and visiting America’s National Parks.
