What is an elder? Elders are faithful, mature Christian laymen who assist the pastor in carrying out the ministry of preaching God’s Word, administering the Sacraments and providing spiritual care for God’s people. Elders are a part of the pastor’s ministry team are are asked to serve based on the qualifications listed in 1 Timothy 3:8-10. The term of an elder is one year, but the constitution and bylaws of Holy Redeemer allow an elder to serve up to ten consecutive years. Members of the congregation are not assigned elders, but are free to call on any of the elders when they have a personal spiritual need or congregational concern they want to discuss.
